Wild Yarn
Caution: Highly Opinionated Area Ahead
No crochet news today except that I'm 7 rows and the edging from completing the baby blanket and I made 2 book thongs this morning (one for my son who made the beads and one for me--because he made the beads).I was reading from Barbara Kingsolver's book Small Wonder and this passage caught me:. . . though in Costa Rica, where children matter more than an army, the sturdiest shoes are made in small sizes, and every tiny hamlet has at least a one-room school.I don't know why, but when I read that I just stopped and thought to myself, "of course, isn't that the way it should be. . . that children matter more than an army and that the sturdiest shoes are made for them." That is the way it should be, but sadly in a lot of cases, is not.It may be so in our own lives, but not in our communities where we need the support the most. Children should be able to thrive in their communities and reach their potential, not be afraid to play in their neighborhoods or go to school because they are picked on. Who stands up for them? Who says, don't act that way, play nice, have fun when mom or dad can't be around? Who tells a struggling child to hold their head up that they are worth everything? When parents can't be there with their children, it falls to the other adults in the community to act responsibly and to make sure each child " is worth more than an army" and "has the sturdiest shoes".That is my social commentary for the day....play nicePeace~ DAWN
Change is good. . .
Sweaters for Yarn
Well, I decided to try recycling sweaters for their yarn. Some of you out there have done this with great success and I thought I'd give it a try. I went to the GoodWill store yesterday and bought 4 sweaters (for $14). The red tags were an sale for half price. So far I have ripped out 2 3/4 of the sweaters. I've already begun recyling one into the butterfly shawl with some minor changes for my taste. So far so good. I love the blue yarn. I made one big blunder. I didn't take pictures of the "lovely" sweaters before I began to rip. So I'll take one now.Okay the above photo includes:- the teal sweater parts and balls plus the beginning of the shawl
- the white fluffy balls plus that cool white textured yarn are from a white sweater
- the chestnut color balls are wool from a bulky sweater (super soft!)
- finally the sweater itself in all its glory before me and my seam ripper get going on it
This is such fun. I never though I'd take such pleasure from FROGGING. As I was holding up the tan sweater there in the photo, this woman said, "oh, that is a lovely sweater". I said, "I just love the colors in it..." this woman had no idea what was to become of the sweater or she may have wrestled me to the ground for it. I will never look at sweaters the same way again.
Can't wait to share the final results of their transfermations.
Oh, I went to send off my package to Deb (she is my swap partner for the wrap) and I had included a little bottle of body spray, so of course it has to go ground instead of flying. It will take about a week to get to her. I hope she gets it and comments before Saturday (that's when we leave for our Vegas trip). You all just don't know, I had such fun making this wrap for her. I hope she can wear it on her cruise.
My neice is in town to compete in a drill team competition in Smyrna so we will be going to that event tonite. I have no idea what expect but she is very talented (and beautiful, I might add). I will try and get some photos to put up later.
Have a great day everyone!
Peace~ DAWN
Here is the bag I made to go with the wrap for the swap. She's pretty. The tassle and the strap are what the wrap is made of. I'll photograph that before I send it off tomorrow......
Interior of bag (nice lining).
Warning: Rambling Ahead
I found the cuteist button at JustCinful's blog and I took it (she said you can). It's the little froggy on the sidebar: gone rippin'. Hehe, I just love it! Love her blog layout as well. Big news on the shawl/poncho swap- - I am done with the "extra" thing I was making. . .okay, it's a little bag to go with the wrap. I just have to line it and then I will post a picture of it. It is adorable!! I want to keep it, fortunately I have enough yarn left over to make one for myself. I'm also half through with the baby blanket for my friend. Giant grannies are mindless crochet so I get alot done when I'm watching tv. Survivor is on tonite...I don't crochet while that is on cause you could miss something while looking down. Ah, 9 days till we (me and hubby) go to Vegas-baby for a week! This will be our third year in a row. Probably our last for awhile. We have tickets to see Celine (my Valentine present) and eat at Fiamma's , which is a fantastic restaurant by the way, for future reference. Cannot wait!!Also, we got confirmation yesterday for our vacation in Florida in June. We got the RonJon Resort in Cocoa Beach from my dad's timeshare. So our lodging for a week is free. Plus, it's the beach and that is all I care about. We went last year but stayed in Orlando with family (which was fine) this year is better cause we won't have to drive an hour to get to the beach. The kids are excited. This may be our last full on family vacation. My oldest is 17! and that means, well we won't get into that cause I don't wanna cry.Two side notes:1. My middle son comes in from track practice yesterday and says, "man, I hate running." Duh, get use to it, it's track that is what you do.2. My youngest is laying on the floor last nite and says, "I can't wait till I can drive so I can go to the dollar store and get peach rings whenever I want." Aaahh, to be a kid and all you want are peach rings to make you happy. I leave you with that (peach rings are gross, by the way--I don't know why anyone would want them. The frogs-which taste like apricots- or the worms, now those are good).Peace~ DAWN

Not a gypsy or anything; my dad was in the military, my husband is in the military and my 4 siblings live all over the U.S. Half the states I've either been too or lived in and the other half I haven't. Not bad. I have time (I hope). Plus there are a lot of places outside the U.S that I want to see. Ah, to have money...

We went to Hot Topic the other day and I got a Willie Wonka tee shirt. I love it! I can't wait for the new Willie Wonka movie to come out this summer. What could be better than Chocolate and Johnny Depp? hmmm, not a whole hell of a lot, that's what. They had 50% off their clearance items and I got a Jack Skeleton rug for only $5 !! I am a big Nightmare Before Christmas fan, so this was a big deal to me. On a similar note: coming in October of this year Tim Burton has a new movie coming out in the Nightmare fashion and it is called The Corpse Bride! Johnny Depp does the main characters voice. I can't wait for that one either. The stitch on my fabulous shawl is the petal stitch. There are several places on the net to find it. Here are a few:Bella OnlineHass DesignPlanet ShoupThey are all pretty good and hopefully if you are looking to master this stitch, one of them can help. If not. . . maybe Donna would be willing to give some pointers:)We have been having some serious rain here the last couple of days. It is really soggy right now and my poor dogs are going stir crazy from lack of exercise. I'm not going stir crazy cause everyone is home from work/school for the holiday and it is a house full. Plus, I have plenty of crochet projects to keep me occupied. I have finished another scarf for the Red Scarf Project. I am also starting a simple granny square blanket for a friend of mine. She had her third baby one month ago and she is so precious. She sent a picture today and I'm in love! I think she will like this banket, and since it is a granny, it will go quickly and I can get it mailed off soon. I was gonna make a blankie for the Cal at Crochetville, but when I got the photo today, I thought to myself, she deserves a blanket, too.I've given you a lot to click on today, so you best get busy. Have a great Presidents day and if you have the day off......Right On!!Peace~ DAWN
Bees are Lucky. . .
Yes, I still get bees in my bedroom on occation and this time they brought me a shawl (what? you may ask) well, Yesterday we were gone all day and into the early evening. We don't use our front door, we use our garage door so I didn't know that the mailman had dropped off a package. This morning I found another bee at my window so I caught it in a cup and took it to the front door to let it out and when I opened the door there was a package laying there. It was from my swap pal (Nina Kate). The shawl she made for me is awesome! I have wanted a shawl like this for awhile but that stitch is a bitch for me. The color is perfect and so is the yarn. I am just so thrilled with it. She also sent me a nice tote bag, some light blue earrings she made, some-a lot-of boulce yarn in a creamy beige and a leather rose. WOW! lucky I am.Peace everyone~ DAWN
My Shawl from Nina Kate (my swap pal)!! Isn't it pretty...
Better Day
I am having a better day today, so I will blog blog blog. First off a little nature observation while I type. My yarn (I typed yarn--haha) my yard if full of birds! a variety actually: a beautiful cardnal, some blue jays--a personal favorite-- some snow birds and our personal house wren. They build a nest every year in our garage and hatch a brood of babies. It's awesome.I finished the wrap (yes, I said wrap) for the shawl/poncho swap. I love it and am so tempted to keep it for myself. I won't of course but it turned out so pretty and the weight of it is perfect. I will take a picture later and post it just before I send it off to the person who will take it on an adventure *hint hint* She doesn't read my blog anyway. I am crocheting a little something extra to go with it and when that is done, it will be on its way. I hope she likes it and gets some use out of it. I really put a lot of thought into it for her.Believe it or not, but I am projectless except for the extra something for the swap! wow, its liberating and overwhelming all at once. Don't get me wrong, I have a ton of project ideas and stashes of yarn for them the problem is deciding on what to start next. I have a couple of new books in my posession with all kinds of stitches just waiting to be tried out. I think I'm gonna start something for me this time. Eeeek! My older two boys have been out of school for the last couple of days plus they get out on Monday for a holiday. The school board cancelled classes Thurs and Fri because the flu bug has hit our county pretty hard. I guess they are hoping a 5 day weekend will help squash it. We have been lucky and not had the flu only colds. Mine, by the way is on the way out! yippie! My poor youngest son is feeling like the ugly step child because he has to go to school. He goes to a city school and they play by their own rules. Poor baby. He does get to go to a birthday party/sleepover tonite, though. That makes it all better in a 9 year olds eyes.Okay, rambling time is over. If you post I hope that you enjoy using the new Haloscan system that I had put on my blog. I like it better and hope you do as well. It was free and easy. They did it for me (if you have Blogger they will cut and paste everything for you, just click a few buttons). Have a great day all!!Peace~ DAWN
Haloscan commenting and trackback have been added to this blog.
HeHe; I now have holoscan for my comments. Sister this is for you: when you click on comments a little box will come up and next to the word "comments" is a ? if you click on the ? you can add smilies and such (cool, huh). Okay all, comment away!
My sister doesn't have a blog, but she played along on the "fun journal activity" I posted on Feb. 15 and here it is:
Well I don't have a jorunal but heres mine: Though native peoples didnot always and everywhere survive the encounters with Europeans, those who did accomplished survival by relying on the adaptive strengths they had evolved over millennia, combining these with creative innovations suited to living with the invaders. From,The Native Americans An Illustrated History, by David Hurst Thomas and about for other authors. - your sister. Thanks sis, for participating. That was a cool passage. I told you it would be interesting. Thanks Cindy. The fringe does look silky in that photo, hmmm.
Having a CRAPPY DAY, so this is it for an entry.
Enjoy your day,

"belated" Happy V-Day
Hi all, I hope you all had a very good Valentines day and got and gave something special to that loved one you hold so dear. My valentine loves me sooo much. I will now share a sappy moment: 18 years ago on Valentines day, my sweetie proposed to me ( I eventually accepted..that is another story, ha). Anyway, on Valentines day every year, my husband proposes again. He does this every year and on every Valentines day I accept, again! It's our little tradition and is what helps make our relationship special... I love him so much!!Unfortunately this year I have a head cold and yesterday after dinner I came in the house took a shower and went to bed...how romantic, huh? I thought I was feeling better, but after the livingroom re-do on Saturday, I took a turn for the worse. My own fault, but things had to be done so...I havent done much by way of Crochet because of this darned cold. I even missed my trip to Hobby Lobby on Monday so by tomorrow-when I plan to go- all that fantastic yarn that is on sale will have been really picked over and I'll have to make do. Damn! I better get busy on some of my neglected projects. Shawl/poncho swap is on the top of the list. It's almost done, but I'm a little parinoid and always think I won't beat the deadline. Have a great day!here's a p.s.
I got this off of Mitzi's blog:Fun Journal Activity
1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the sentence in your journal along with these instructions.
5. Don't search around and look for the "coolest" book you can find. Do what's actually next to you.
Here is mine: But did you know the scent of green apples has been found to ease headaches, while the fragrance of spiced apples jump starts the creative process? *from Romancing the Ordinary by Sarah Ban Breathnach
Give it a try, it's very interesting.

Two Thumbs Up
What a funny movie!! If you were thinking of seeing "Hitch" go for it. Well worth the ticket price. Be sure to stay at the end for the ugly dancing scene. Saw a couple of previews for some comedy movies that looked good, but I'll wait for video. There is nothing else out there that I want to pay $7.75 a ticket to see. We decided that while the living room is empty for the carpet installation, we might as well go ahead and paint the walls too. So me and my son went back up to Lowes and picked up some paint. It's called Tagsale Linen. It's kind of a fleshy beige. We're apparently doing a Trading Spaces thing and getting as much done in the room in the shortest amount of time. Right now they are in there nailing down stuff and preparing the floor for the padding. I'm so excited to be getting new carpet and getting rid of the stark white walls! I crocheted a cute little scarf from Knit Pixie with some chunky alpaca I bought from Handpaintedyarn.com. It worked up in about 1 hour! I wore it out to the movies and have it on now as a matter of fact. I'll get a picture up of it next week. It's under the free patterns page. They have some nice yarns too and their Reds, Pinks and Whites are on sale now for Valentines day. Have a great Day!!Peace~ DAWN
Movie Nite
Tonite we are going to go see "Hitch" with Will Smith. I'm looking forward to it cause the previews crack me up. I'll let you know how it was tomorrow.I caught a bit of a cold yesterday. It started off with a bad sinus attack at like 5 in the morning. I took some sinus meds and by the middle of the day, my sinuses wouldn't stop draining and by the evening I felt like shit. I took niquil (the liquid tablets--get real, I won't drink that crap) and slept like a baby. I feel better this morning. I need to give a big thanks to Natalie for sending me ginger chews- - - they really helped. Big day tomorrow; we get our new carpet laid down!! Who-hoo! I can't wait to get rid of the old carpet. I just dread having to move everything out of the livingroom before 8a.m. Yeah, the boys are thrilled about that one, plus my oldest gets to take the ACT in the morning as well. In crochet news I'm just finishing up a couple of projects. My latest doily is starched and I'll put it up in the thread gallery later. I'm almost done with the red scarf for the Red Scarf Project. Plus, I'm still working on the shawl/poncho for the swap. That is coming along beautifully. I may start a new thread project, but other than that my plate is full and I need to finish up those things first.Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!Peace~ DAWN
My first attempt at Free Form Crochet!!
Challenge Yourself
Over at Crochetville they added a new forum called Free Form Q and A. I've been wanting to try free form crochet for awhile, but have been chicken. I don't know why--it's silly, I know--because it's free form, no mistakes. Everyone who has done this type of crochet that I've seen has had some awesome results and I felt intimidated. But no more! I took the challenge and created my first ever doll with a free form dress and I think see is adorable. Plus, now I don't have any excuses because I took the first step. Yeah!
So, if there is something in the way of crochet (or else where in your life) that you have been wanting to try but have been holding back, I say to you. . . CHALLENGE YOURSELF and you may just be pleasantly surprised!
Have a great day, all!!

Be Generous
BE GENEROUS: that is what my Trust your Vibes card said today. So in that vain I would like to share with you a writing from Black Elk, Holy Man of the Oglala Sioux:
PEACE:
Peace...
comes within the souls of men
when they realize their
relationship, their oneness,
with the Universe
and
all its powers,
and
when they realize that
at the center of the Universe
dwells Wankan tanka,

that this center
is really EVERYWHERE.
It Is Within Each Of Us.
We are one with the universe and the universe is in us all. Not a few, not one but in all of us. So, my card said to BE GENEROUS and I pass that on to each of you. Be Generous today with no expectations, no strings and no agenda. Just be nice because you CAN and because its the RIGHT thing to do without exception.

Happy Birthday to Husband and Son
Today my husband and youngest son celebrate their respective birthdays. My youngest is 9 years old today!!! and my husband is not.
I bought a new crocheting book today. I don't need another one, but this one caught my eye: Crocheting School-A Complete Course.
It is completely full of a variety of techniques and stitches and the photos are super clear and the instructions are easy to follow. If you are looking for a good all round book check into this one. I also ordered a couple more books and when I get them I will post about those, too.
We went in to school this morning for my oldest. He was setting up his class schedule for his senior year next year (catch me). They like the parents to come for whatever reason. Bragging Time (turn away if flagrant nepotism makes you barf): our boys are GREAT! we don't need to hold their hands because they really have their shit together. Even the 9 year old. Me and my husband are very blessed and we are grateful. His classes where right on target and he basically just needs to keep on doing what he is doing.
No crochet news. Just working on the same three or four projects and hopefully will have a couple done by the weekend.
Keep on crocheting, people. I'm SICK of seeing all the knit stuff out there. I saw at least 5 (FIVE ) knitting magazines at the bookstore and a bunch of knitting books. Only 4 crochet books and 2 thread crochet mags and 1 crochet mag. Don't get me wrong- if you knit- carry on but crocheters rock, too. We need some publishers to take the hint and give us our due also. Crochet fashions and accessories are brillant right now! I love to see how creative someone can be with a ball of yarn and a single hook.
Got to pick up the little one from school---we're eating out at a Chinese restaurant tonite and coming home for some Black Forest Cake for dessert. Enjoy your evenings
Peace~ DAWN
Weekend Update
Friday I got the yarn I was expecting! and that has made me happy and busy. I wound them into balls and got straight to work on the thing I'm making for the Swap. It is turning out so pretty--I love the way this yarn is hanging and the weight of it. She's gonna love it (I hope).
Saturday my sister and her girlfriend came over and my husband helped my sister with her taxes. I taught L. how to make a little bag. She wanted to learn how to crochet in the round so she could make bags out of hemp. So while we were at it...it turned into the bottom the sides and the draw-string round. She was thrilled and I was thrilled for her. I think my poor sis was bored out of her mind. Yarn and such is not her thing. She is more of an artist with paint than with fibers. But she's a sport.
Also, I got my "gift" from Adagio Teas for putting a link to them on my blog. I got 6 sample tins of green tea! Six! I was expecting one, so that was very pleasant. I broke out the teapot and we had some of the Apricot Green tea-- I highly recommend this one! I let my last cup get cold and drank it anyway and I think I prefer this particular tea cold! It will be a great one this summer. Can't wait. As I type, I'm having some Red bud Chai.
Sunday--superbowl day! GO EAGLES! time will tell on that one as the game hasn't even started yet. I have hope though. My husband is out in the shop seeing if he can make me some handles out of oak for some crochet purses and bags. I believe he can do it and it will save me a ton of money cause wooden handles are not cheap and are hard to find unless you order them. We watched a suck ass movie this morning...'Harold and Kumar go to White Castle'. Avoid this piece of crap at all cost. In fact, smack anyone who saw it and said it was good. I think every slang word for vagina was used at some point . . . it just made my skin crawl at the base way in which women are portrayed and the fact that we as women take it and don't, in unison stand up and tell guys where to stick it. We out number them, you know. If we would just stand up in our power and take back the position of the godesses that we were meant to be....
Blah blah. Just a little ticked.
I want to put up a photo of this swap yarn, but I want it to be a surprise more, so I will refrain. Enjoy the game if you choose to watch it and if not, enjoy whatever it is you choose to do instead.
Peace~ DAWN
UPS is Great
I love the brown truck! they bring such wonderful things to your door--- like RAOK packages! I got a great one today chuck full of all kinds of goodies that I just love and adore. Who loves ginger? me. Who loves oils and sage bundles? me. Who loves tea and crystals? me. Who loves my Raoker? Me! I'm feeling extra special and loved today and I am full of gratitude. I can't even tell you....
What a way to start the weekend! which will be filled with little 8 and 9 year old boys sleeping over for my youngest ones birthday. He and my husband share a birthday on Monday, but the *gulp* sleep over is Saturday. I told my husband, I think I have to be somewhere Saturday nite, hmm, wonder what my sister is doing that day?
Mmm, that ginger chew was really good:)
I have started a new project... I'm making a tote bag with granny squares in a spring garden color theme. So far it is looking good....I will have a ton of RH yarn leftover so depending on how this one turns out, I may make a few of these to give away. The colors are making me long for warmer days. I went out to get the mail yesterday and saw, poking through the dead leaves in the front garden, the shoot of the Hyacynths and some of the Crocus! anyway, I will also line the tote in a pretty floral pattern that goes great with the yarn colors and maybe make a little carry case for hooks and scissors and such. Unless my yarn for the swap gets here soon, I will have this tote knocked out rather quickly.
Have a great Weekend everyone!!!
Peace~ DAWN
What a great RAOK package! I'm gonna have some tea now :)
My Seraphina Shawl!!
Close up of the stitch and the yarn!!
My Seraphina is Done!
Here she is in all her glory (I appologize for the dark photo--it is super cloudy and drizzly here and the lighting in my house is very subdued). You can get a better idea of the color tone and quality in the close up photo. I am very satisfied with the results.

Bee's are Back
Well, the bees just won't give up. Yesterday morning I found 4 of them again just hanging out on my bedroom window. I opened my curtains in the morning and had my face practically touching the glass just gazing out at the drizzle and greyness when my vision focused on something and I realized I was practically nose to nose with a bee. Once again there were 4...must be significant in my life right now. My dad is just excited that there could be honey in our walls. Yeah, I'll be collecting on that...just let me get my demolition hat out.
I have 4 more rows on the Sehaphin shawl and then she will be done!! I can't say gorgeous enough to describe her. Well, if I don't procrastinate I may get her done today.
The past two days I have been getting packages together to mail to some lucky people. It's been fun and I think I am finally caught up on my RAOK pay it forwards. Plus an extra one for good measure.
In case my Winter Secret Pal is reading this today...this is for you. I sincerely hope that all is well with you and your family. I am sorry to hear that you have had such a rough time of it lately. Please don't feel badly about the reveal...things happen that we have no way of nowing are coming and dealing with them can sometimes take all that we have. As long as you are dealing with what needs to be taken care of, that is truely all that matters. I wish you better days ahead and there is no need to appologize. The dog on the ecard said it all. I'm a sucker for 'the puppy face'.
Okay, have a great day all!!
Peace~ DAWN
Handpaintedyarn.com Good Stuff.
Adagio Teas!! NICE--
Tequila Mockingbird
Tequila Mockingbird is a blog and when I saw the title it just made me laugh. I have a weird sense of humor, anyway. I checked out the blog and it was interesting, so I linked to it for you in case you want something to read besides crochet. (blasphamy, maybe....but you will get over it)
Okay, I got my order from
Adagio Teas yesterday evening and I am so thrilled. I ran around the house telling a bunch of men (Hello) "you have to smell this...isn't it great...oooh look at this one....isn't this box pretty". You get the picture I'm sure. All of my guys are so use to me and are such good sports. They are gonna make great husbands one day and my husband is already great! Anyhow, the picture above speaks for itself. I have one more gift certificate and it is going toward some of the
Jasmine bloom tea for sure (plus, you know I will get some others as well). Oh, they included a free sample--that's the one that is open--of their
Valentines tea. It smells like chocolate strawberries! mmmmmm
On to the Yarn. I ordered some yarn from
Handpaintedyarn.com and the photo is what I got. I'm so excited. The colors are brillent and the yarn texture is awesome. It takes a little longer for the order to arrive (but they warn you of this beforehand). It keeps their costs down. Very reasonable and unique yarn. I'm still waiting on the yarn I ordered for the shawl/poncho swap, so until then, I started on the Red Scarf Project scarf. It is gonna be gorgeous.
Show of hands if you are ready for SPRING! I am so sick of the dreary weather we've been having in Tenn. I can handle cold, but I gotta have the sunshine with it or it drives me bananas. I looked on Marnies blog yesterday and she posted pictures from her weekly visit to the beach to roam and play and man, oh man, was I envious. It is February, however, which means spring is almost here!! so light some candles tonite and for those of you with tea...drink it if you got it.
